In the midst of increasingly fierce business competition, certification is no longer just a formality, but proof of a company’s seriousness in maintaining quality, safety, and security. Of the many standards available, ISO is the most popular choice in various industries. However, other certifications such as HACCP, GMP, and SMK3 are also often compared. So, which certification is the most appropriate to take your business to the next level?
What is ISO?
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an international organization that produces ISO standards based in Geneva, Switzerland. ISO plays an important role in measuring the credibility of companies that want to compete globally by providing standards to improve quality management systems, guarantee product or service quality, and increase consumer confidence. This is what makes ISO often considered superior to other certifications.
Some of the most widely used ISO standards include:
β’ ISO 9001 β Quality Management System
β’ ISO 14001 β Environmental Management System
β’ ISO 45001 β Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHS)
β’ ISO 37001 β Anti-Bribery Management System
β’ ISO 20000-1 β Service Management System
β’ ISO 27001 β Information Security Management System
What are HACCP, GMP, and SMK3?
Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) is a food safety management system that focuses on identifying and controlling hazards in every stage of food production to prevent contamination and risk hazards in products. HACCP is a mandatory requirement for food companies that want to penetrate the export market. However, its scope is limited to the food industry, so it cannot be applied more broadly like ISO.
Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) is an international standard that regulates safe and high-quality production practices. GMP focuses solely on cleanliness, sanitation, and quality control during the production process. Meanwhile, ISO offers a comprehensive management approach that can be applied to various business lines.
The Occupational Safety and Health Management System (SMK3) is part of a company’s management system that aims to control occupational safety and health risks in order to create a safe, efficient, and productive workplace. SMK3 is mandatory for companies with a minimum of 100 employees or those with high risks. SMK3 is an Indonesian national standard and remains local in nature, unlike ISO, which is recognized internationally.
Comparison of ISO, HACCP, GMP, and SMK3
When compared, ISO is far superior because it is broad, flexible, and globally recognized. Meanwhile, HACCP, GMP, and SMK3 are more technical and limited to specific fields.
HACCP focuses solely on food safety, making it relevant only for the food and beverage industry, unlike ISO 22000, which not only covers food safety but is also integrated with quality management systems.
GMP regulates hygienic and consistent production processes, particularly in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food sectors. However, its scope is limited to production, whereas ISO 9001 regulates quality comprehensively, from business processes, risk management, to customer satisfaction. SMK3 is important in Indonesia as it is mandated by the government for high-risk sectors. However, this certification is only recognized nationally, whereas ISO 45001 is already recognized internationally, thereby providing greater added value
HACCP, GMP, and SMK3 are indeed important in certain contexts, but their nature is limited and only applies to specific fields or regions. In contrast, ISO stands as a comprehensive, flexible, and globally recognized international standard.
By prioritizing ISO, companies not only comply with regulations but also build a global reputation, improve efficiency, and expand market opportunities. Other certifications such as HACCP, GMP, and SMK3 can still serve as complements, but ISO should be the cornerstone for companies aiming to grow and compete in the modern era.
